Dear friends of LIS Community
Prof. Subbaiah Arunachalam, who is well known to this forum through his regular writings and messages, is stepping into the club of octogenarians today as he completes 80 years of his life.
MANY, MANY HAPPY RETURNS OF THE DAY ARUN!
Arunachalam, a scientist and science journalist by profession, has a long and passionate association with the LIS profession. He was a close associate of Dr. Eugene Garfield and served in the editorial board of the print edition of the famous Current Contents for several years. He is an early pioneer in India’s scientometrics based research studies. He has been a forceful advocate of and contributor to the open access movement in India and the world. I consider him a bold and profound thinker, writer, and speaker of our times. I remember one of his highly provoking articles of his youthful days as science journalist in CSIR, published in Science Today magazine in the 1970s – “Why is Indian science mediocre?” – which was quoted extensively in a New York Times article, drawing the attention of the science policy makers for corrective actions.
Friends, as a token of our respect for and recognition of Arun’s contribution to the LIS world, please join me in greeting him and wishing him good health on this very special day of his accomplished life.
Happy Birthday to you Arun!
