Dear Members It is a great pleasure to share with all of you that NCSI-Net team along with NCSI successfully organized 7th Dr. TB Rajashekar Memorial Seminar (2011): Designing Web Portal / Gateway Services Using Drupal on Saturday 12th November 2011 at NCSI Seminar hall, IISc, Bangalore. The response for the seminar by the students and the budding LIS professionals was overwhelming. We had 60+ registrations of which most of them were students and young professionals from various universities and organizations in Karnataka andTamil Nadu. Seminar started off with a brief introduction about Dr.T.B.Rajashekar Memorial Seminar Series by Dr. Francis Jayakanth. He also highlighted late Dr. TBR’s passion towards teaching and educating young professionals about the latest developments in the field of ICT and their applications in providing information services The first technical session by Dr. Francis was on Introduction to Web portals/ Gateways & Overview on Drupal. The speaker touched upon different types of content that the LIS professionals need to handle and the associated challenges in managing these content. He also spoke about content and their characteristics, the need for content management, and the ease with which content management systems can be deployed for managing the content. He also highlighted the how libraries can effectively use the CMS to provide gateway and other kinds of information services to the users. After the coffee/tea break Mr. Maruthu Pandiyan demonstrated the Installation of DRUPAL and its dependency tools on the windows XP platform. Mr. Shivaram talked about Modules, their installation and configuration, Content creation, Custom content creation, Multilingual functionalities of DRUPAL. All these features of DRUPAL were demonstrated to the participants. Mrs. Jayashree talked about Themes and site configuration functionalities, she also highlighted number of third party themes available for DRUPAL and how to configure in order to change the look and feel of the web portal, the presentation was followed by demo of these features. After the lunch break. Mr. Pandian demonstrated configuring Menus, Blocks and User management features of DRUPAL. He showed how to create custom menus and blocks as per individual user requirements and also talked about available contributed modules for these features. Mrs. Jayashre demonstrated Views Configuration in DRUPAL, showed two different views for custom content of News paper clips and RSS feed. She also touched CRON settings and Back-up features of DRUPAL. Mr. Madhuresh, as a case study, demonstrated building a library portal for a R & D establishment. He showed how to integrate library services like Feed aggregators, creating structured content with the help of taxonomy functionality, Table of Content service etc, In career advice session Mr. Prasanna spoke about the importance of communication skills, CV preparation, how to prepare for an interviews etc, which are essential for young professionals to build their careers. Mr. Ananda Byrappa advised students and young professionals to emulate successful personalities by way of developing positive attitude, being a constant learner, being passionate about the work and most importantly, to have an impeccable personal value system. Mr. Shivaram proposed the vote of thanks. NCSI-Net is thankful to all seminar participants. Judging by the seminar feedback of the participants, the seminar was a great success.
