About the Workshop:
The present day libraries are extensively using Information Technology for information management. As part of storage and access to digital information, the libraries are developing their own digital libraries / institutional digital repositories. There are number of free software available for developing digital libraries and Dspace (http://www.dspace.org) is one of the most popular software developed jointly by MIT Libraries and HP labs. DSpace is a digital asset management system. It helps to create, index and retrieve various forms of digital content. Dspace has built-in Interoperability between the systems and adheres to international standards for metadata.
This workshop is planned to meet the growing demand for Developing Digital Libraries. As DSpace is open source software and it had become popular due to its increased use by the LIS professionals. The workshop is aimed to support growing needs for learning software which can be useful to build institutional digital libraries and repositories. Dspace being one of the most popular having number of facilities, the workshop is being organized to enable the LIS professionals to start building their own repository.
About DSpace:
  1. Dspace is an open source software and is freely downloadable from http://www.dspace.org
  2. Submission facility allows scientists and researchers to upload digital documents from anywhere in the world
  3. Workflow feature allows moderation of the submitted documents.
  4. Uses persistent handles.
  5. Conforms to the standards like Dublin Core and OAI-PMH v.2.0.
  6. Security can be built at various levels to effect restricted access.
  7. Indian Language based digital libraries can be built as it conforms to the UNICODE standard


Objectives:
  1. Today every organization needs to develop its own Digital Institutional Repository. The LIS professionals need training to develop these repositories. This workshop is organized to make them competent in using the software.
  2. To provide background knowledge of the digital library and its related concepts.
  3. To offer hands on experience in using Dspace Software.
  4. To encourage the participants in developing their own Institutional Digital Libraries.

The topics to be covered in the Workshop:
  1. Overview of DSpace
  2. Installation of DSpace
  3. DSpace Users: Anonymous, Members & Authors
  4. DSpace Administration
  5. Lucene Search Engine
  6. Persistent Handles
  7. DSpace Customization

The sessions in the workshop include lectures, demonstration and Hands-on- experience. The Laboratory facilities are made available for practice to the participants.


Dept. of Library & Information Science:
The Department was established in 1959. At present the Department is offering BLISc, MLISc, M.Phil and Ph.D. Programmes. It is well equipped with a Computer Lab and Seminar Library. The Department had earlier organized several National and International Conferences / Seminars / workshops covering various facets of Library and Information Science. Recently, the department organized a mega conference, the "53rd All India Library Conference - 2007" of the Indian Library Association (ILA), during 13th - 16th Dec. 2007.

ALSD:
ALSD, Hyderabad is a professional organization established in 1965. It has about 600 members. The members are both from India and outside. The Association organized several programs / seminars and conferences. It published quarterly ALSD Communication.
