Abstract:
The theme of the talk would be on Open Access (OA), predominantly
discusses on how "OA journals (OAJ)" play a role in scholarly
communication among scientific community. OA is relatively new concept
identified and nurtured by the scientists for scholarly communication. As
OA and OAJ are the two new concepts emerged with the advent of Internet
and web 2.0 tools and technologies. The study on the scientists use of OAJ
for their Scholarly Communication aimed at finding how OAJ helps in better
science communication in general and life scientists in particular. As the
OA and OAJ has become a buzz-word in the scholarly world today. This study
aimed to find the pulse of the life scientists from among major scientific
and R&D institutions in India; to assess their awareness and subsequent
use of open access journals. There are very specific issues delved in
detail such as copyright, plagiarism, peer review, the reasons for
scientist publishing activity and so on. This study also determines the
preferences and willingness among life scientists to publish in OAJ as
well as commercial publishing of their scholarly research output.
About Speaker:
Dr. Rajendra Babu H has done Masters in Library and Information Science
from Bangalore University. He has done his post masterâs training in
âIT Applications to Library and Information Servicesâ in National
Centre for Science Information (NCSI), Indian Institute of Science (IISc),
Bangalore-12. He has done his doctoral studies on âUse of Open Access
Journals for Scholarly Communication in Life Sciences: A Studyâ from
University of Mysore, Mysore-06.
He has over 19 years of professional working experience in Academic
institutions and Multinational companies. Presently he is working as an
Assistant Professor, Dept. of Studies and Research in Library and
Information Science, Tumkur University, Tumkur.
He has extensive experience in Developing and Managing world-class
Information and Knowledge centers, Content Research functions in HLL, GE,
Capco, Symphony Services Corporation and Wipro technologies working with
cross border teams. He is a Six sigma, NCC âCâ Certified and
represented Karnataka State in Volley Ball. He is a member of professional
organizations such as NCSI-NET Foundation, KALA, MyLISA, MILAN and so on.
He has served as General Secretary, and presently serving as a governing
council member in Karnataka State Library Association (KALA), Bangalore,
India.
He has co-authored 4 books, edited 5 conference proceedings with ISBN and
has published over 30 papers in national/ international
journals/conferences
