Area seniors and low to moderate income individuals can receive assistance at no cost with the task by going to one of four locations. Once again the American Association of Retired Persons has set up with site to assist those in need with their taxes paying special attention to those 60 and over. They will be at the Bossier Central Library, located at 22206 Beckett Street in Bossier City, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., Highland Center at 520 Olive Street in Shreveport on Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m., Broadmoor Library paper site, 1212 Captain Shreve Dr. in Shreveport on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. and Southern Hills Recreation Center at 1002 Bert Kouns Industrial Loop in Shreveport on from Tuesday through Thursday from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Volunteer tax counselors assist people in preparing their tax returns and answer tax questions from Feb. 1 to Apr 15. Counselors receive annual training in both state and federal tax preparation in January and must pass an open book test. Counselors give a minimum of four hours per week at an AARP Tax-Aide site. Some counselors provide free electronic filing of state and federal returns as well. Limited shut-in service is available in some areas. Volunteers needed for publicity, technology and administrative positions as well. "I have recommended having their taxes done this way to several of my friends," Alice Clapp of Bossier City said. "My husband Webster and I have had ours done this way for years." Clapp said that since the workshop is held at the library she and her husband just pick up a book, take a seat and wait their turn. "I would recommend having their taxes done here to anyone," she said. "The volunteers are helpful and courteous to everyone." AARP Tax-Aide has provided this service for over 30 years and is affiliated with the Internal Revenue Service. Volunteers are needed throughout the state to replace and augment our existing volunteers. Previous tax experience is not necessary. Other positions for recruiting, publicity, technology and other areas are also needed.
