Dear Everyone, Glad to know about the discussion on data conversion and challenges that we all face. I have had challenging task of converting SLIM++ Data into MARC21 format. It was a long process. Of course I have learnt a big lesson in this. As suggested by Mr/Dr. Moorthy that we can think of using KOHA or NEWGENLIB. WE are currently migrating our records into KOHA. We used MARCEdit a free software to convert records into MARC21. I can share my experience with someone who is interested in this. MARCEdit can convert SQL DB into MARC21. As long as your data is in MARC format, you can import data into any libsoftware that support MARC import facility. We too faced problems in using the software in 2005-06 at DRDL, Hyderabad. We switched over from Libris to LibSys. For data export, they took enormous time. The Engineer who visited DRDL, Hyderabad took data on CD to facilitate export of OPAC data. But after 6 months expressed inability to export saying some lame excuse. Again they took the data and took more time. Meanwhile I joined DESIDOC in 2006, and was able to call their senior executives to solve the problem. All this took more than 1 year. Again they charge exorbitantly for maintenance. I understand it has the largest customer base in India and so they are dictating term (Monopoly). LIS professionals have to unitedly take on such issues raising in National Forums like Conferences, etc. Whenever we suggest a new facility--utility--improvement, they take and improve the software. But our intellectual capital (suggestions/improvements) do not get any rewards. The are used to bring new release with increased price tag. I Agree with you,but not now. Like Dr. Pradeep I alos face the same problem with libsys, They are charging 1lac for conversion of 10k data. Secondly there are also so many library professionals (Worked with libsys) to whom I know, they can come volunterly and share their knowledge among others if any body organise training they may help, but those who have an urgency pl circulate a note/procedure/guideline form your side how to convert? You need to attend or organise at least two days workshop at your place regarding criteria for selecting library software, software management and data coversion.

Bibliographic data, in fact, from libsys can be converted to CCF, MARC21, Excel etc. It all depends on the features you opted for at the time of signing license agreement with Libsys or with any other software vendors.
