INDIAN STATISTICAL INSTITUTE Documentation Research and Training Centre 8th Mile, Mysore Road Bangalore 560059 Seminar Metadata for Interoperable Information Systems Abstract: The growth of information has reached a situation where we have overwhelmingly different sources and types of information, different formats, data structures and description standards. One of the key challenges of information management today is the need to retrieve and interrelate relevant information from a huge disparate collection of information. The concept of metadata has been emerged as solution to this problem. But with advances in technology and metadata applications, there emerged a number of metadata schema as per the type, domains and purpose of use of information. The main aim of metadata standards was stated to standardize descriptions so as to maintain consistency in information representation between different systems. But today there are a plethora of different metadata standards for distinct communities, such as library, information and records management fields, domains, services etc. The increased number of metadata standards has led to the concepts like metadata crosswalking, ontologies of metadata etc. In this scenario it becomes necessary to examine the relevance of metadata standards and also common representation formats necessary to identify and process data between different systems. The seminar aims to present the relevance of metadata in the present information overwhelming environment and certain issues that arise.
