Advanced Workshop on ISIS for Windows (WINISIS) Workshop Dates: May 14-18, 2006 Place: Thapar University, Patiala (Formerly Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology) (www.tiet.ac.in) Supported by UNESCO, New Delhi (www.unesco.org/newdelhi) ISIS for Windows (WINISIS) and its predecessor CDS-ISIS have played an important role in automation of library operations in developing countries like India. ISIS has become a preferred first tool for library automation for its easy-to-use features, convenient availability, negligible cost of implementation, continuous development & support from UNESCO and a large user community. Recent developments in WINISIS such as web based enabled interface, handling of digital documents etc have made it a potential tool for development and management of digital libraries. Due to fast expansion of higher education in India in the recent years, a large number of new and established institutions are embarking upon implementation of ICT for provision of library and information services. There is also increasing interest among information professionals to use open source information processing tools WINSIS, Greenstone, DSpace, EPrint, etc. However, limited training opportunities are an impediment to spread of these tools. This 5-day Workshop at Thapar University is an attempt to fulfill this need of Library and Information community, which is being organized in collaboration with Department of Scientific & Industrial Research, Government of India and the UNESCO, New Delhi from May 14 to May 18, 2007. Objectives To equip existing and potential user of WINSIS in using advance features of the software, such as hyper-link, and web interface etc. Methodology The Workshop will cover all aspects of WINISIS, however special emphasis will be provided to advance features such as use of web tools like GENISIS, management of full text documents using linking features, use of WINISIS for automation of libraries, and exchange and conversion of WINISIS data to other tools such as Greenstone and vice versa. The format of the workshop has been designed to offer a flexible learning environment that will include lecture demonstration, group activities, visits /access to the library databases for live demonstration and extensive practical training. WINISIS and other supporting products will be given away courtesy DSIR to each participant. Target Audience & Expected Outcomes Practicing or trained- to- be library and information professionals in academic, research and other organizations which are embarking upon library automation and digitization projects.
