Indian Statistical Institute Documentation Research and Training Centre 8th Mile, Mysore Road, RVCE post Bangalore 560059 SEMINAR-2 MUSIC INFORMATION RETRIEVAL: AN OVERVIEW Abstract Music is not only for entertainment and pleasure but has been used for a wide range of purposes due to its social and physiological effects. At the beginning of 21st century, due to permeation of internet in daily life, the world is facing ever increasing growth of digitised music. Some of the music platforms having a collection of more than 30 million tracks, has posed a major challenge in searching, retrieving and organising the music contents. Traditionally, Music Information Retrieval (MIR) was based on the metadata of music but because of the emergence of a huge number of digital music, it is not satisfactory now. Therefore a new MIR system i.e., Content Based Music Information Retrieval is gaining the popularity. MIR involves experts of various domains like Musicology, Engineering, Computer Science, Libraries and Psychology which makes it a true interdisciplinary domain. In this seminar, we will discuss various MIR Systems, technologies used, the approaches and the challenges to music information retrieval. We will also discuss the role of libraries in MIR.
