We are raising some problems of college Librarians/ Dy. Librarian/ Asst. Librarian/ Lecturers at university level. If you are one of them then I request you to join us. If not then also we need your support in reaching out all such library professionals working in Pune University or affiliated colleges and institutes. I request you to forward this mail to those people or inform them by some other means so that we can come together and discus following issues.
1) College Librarians should be considered as a faculty and should be given the same rights given to the teachers.
College Librarian should have right to represent on board of studied of LIS, he should be given a right to vote and choose his representatives on board. Since librarian is a person who is actually working in the library he knows what knowledge one should pusses to be successful in this profession and what should be taught to new entrants. Librarian can design new courses, syllabus and examination pattern so that the new entrants will have the right skills to cope with the changing needs of the library users.
2) Academic library professionals should have the nomenclatures same as approved by Andhra Gvt.
Andhra Pradesh Government has re-designated Librarians/Deputy Librarians/Assistant Librarians as Professors/Associate Professors/Assistant Professors in Library and Information Science.
3) College Librarian should be considered as head of department of library and information science like other teachers for their respective departments in colleges.
Librarian is continuously involved in teaching students in how to Locate, retrieve and use correct, pinpointed information quickly and accurately. He/she is also engage in developing reading habits and achieve information literacy among the students by doing this they actually stimulate the learning process.
4) Library profession should have the separate faculty like other professions e.g. Law, Management, Medicine etc.
Library and information science is a profession and it should be treated as a separate profession. It should be given an equal chance for its development like other professions. The separate faculty of LIS will help in the development of this profession. Presently LIS is been clubbed in M.M.S. (Mental and Moral and social sciences) with other subjects, which are non-professional courses therefore LIS should have separate faculty like management, law, architect etc.
5) One seat should be reserved for college librarian on senate.
There is no representation of college librarians in the senate. University librarian is ex-officio member of the senate.
