INDIAN STATISTICAL INSTITUTE DOCUMENTATION RESEARCH AND TRAINING CENTRE 8 TH MILE MYSORE ROAD, RVCE POST BANGALORE 560059 DRTC COLLOQUIUM -5 Document Retrieval to Entity Retrieval: A New Search Paradigm ABSTRACT: It is quite often observed that when people use retrieval systems, they do not just search documents or text passages in the first place, but for some information contained inside, which is related to some entities, for instance, person, organization, location, events, etc. The goal is to obtain information on entities. Entity search, a search mechanism, tries to identify entities strongly associated with query terms. Entity search differs from traditional document retrieval in a number of ways. Entity search tries to close the gap between what a searcher is looking for and the actual things that exist in the real world. Further, a query may consists of multiple aspects of entity(ies). For complex queries, entity search is helpful to find out relevant answers. Entity search engine enables searchers to explore highly relevant information during search to discover interesting relationships among its various facets.
