"Buy India a Library" is a project for funding a library in India via twitter from 4 Librarians. See the blog http://buyindiaalibrary.wordpress.com/ which is set up by four Information Professionals from the US and Europe, to buy India a library, via Good Gifts.org http://goodgifts.org/ . They launched a New Year appeal to raise money enough to build and fund either a mobile library in Africa or permanent library in India, covering areas which are currently book-free zones. This is interesting that an appeal launched via Twitter generated BP 1384 (appx 1 lakh Rs.) within 10 days (till 19th Jan). According to them, this is sufficient to buy the permanent library in India and a mobile library in Africa. It is interesting to know that as per their calculation, British Pound 1250 is sufficient to buy a permanent village library in India including furniture, books and librarian salary for 2 years. I am not sure whether any such calculation has been done ever by any India based organization or our Library Associations? You may also like to see the video about the project hosted on the above mentioned blog. The video was recorded by American Libraries Magazine at the ALA Mid Winter meeting in San Diego, USA.
