Friends Part-time research need not necessarily be a Ph.D/doctoral or any *academic degree-oriented* program. We can think of research projects, consultancy assignments, demand-based library&information services, time-bound customised tasks, adhoc work with defined deliverables, etc ALSO in the category of "part-time research"... can't we? Any work or task involving academic, quasi-academic research studies, literature surveys, data analysis, field-based research or any research needed for activism, any kind of research required for *specific need-based documentation* ........ in my view, all this can be considered to be in the category of part-time research. Research activity involved in an academic program like M.A., M.Phil, Ph.D etc are more of a *formal* nature with strict boundaries of research domains. As a library professional working for almost 10years in a freelance mode, I can assertively say or claim that the assignments and/or projects I completed ... gave me a great deal of scope for research (both scholarly and field-based) ... which I am sure I would not have done had I been in regular positions in organisations! In this context I also propose to heads of organisations or institutes who are shouldering major responsibilities of tasks and accountability, and are constrained by lack of adequate / skilled manpower, may consider the services of library professionals for tasks involving part-time research and documentation. Librarians getting involved in such activities may get the opportunity to break the monotony which comes with regular conventional positions. Research activity is open for all categories of Library and Information Science professionals including School Librarians. As a research guide, I am guiding a candidate for Ph.D. who is working in a Polytechnic. If so, why not a School Librarian. However, the person seeking for admission to Ph.D. (part time) should have UGC prescribed qualification and interest to carryout research.
