UNESCO is launching Internet discussion on Open Educational Resources Toolkit11-06-2008 (Paris)
The UNESCO Community on Open Educational Resources (OER) is launching an Internet discussion in order to provide input to the finalisation of an OER Toolkit, which has been created to support the development and use of Open Educational Resources. The session will take place from 16 to 27 June 2008 and will be open to everybody. OER Toolkit is a UNESCO initiative. The draft text has been prepared by Philipp Schmidt of the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. The work was inspired by, and builds on a discussion organized by the UNESCO OER Community in 2006, which focused on a 'Do-It-Yourself/Do-It-Together' resource aimed at building capacity for local OER development and use.
The UNESCO OER Community has become a recognised international space for debate and information sharing on the growing OER movement. It recently received the 2008 MERLOT Africa Network and eLearning Africa (MANeLA) Leadership Award. This award recognises the community's "significant contribution to the global understanding of the issues and innovations surrounding OER and the OER movement". The UNESCO Community of Interest on Open Educational Resources was formed in 2005 at the end of a formal Internet discussion forum on Open Educational Resources: open content for higher education. This forum was the third of a series organized by the UNESCO International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP) to examine key issues related to the use of Information and Communication Technologies in higher education.
