*Workshop on Web Content Management* *(WCM 2011) ** (3rd -4th December, 2011)* *Organized by*** *Department of Library and Information Science, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh*** *(Partially supported by **DST under Project Mode)*** * * *About the Workshop* Information Technology has made advances over the last several years. As the World Wide Web grows, it is becoming more and more complex for humans to efficiently find and exploit the information. The underlying idea of having a description of data available on the Web is organized in such a way as to be used by machines. Therefore management of information on web is crucially important for better utilization of resources. The information professionals in all kinds of information warehouses have to apply the tools and techniques of ICT to meet the changing requirements of the users by innovating its procedures and systems. This workshop aims to help the library professionals to get an overview and hands on experience on designing library web portals and developing subject gateways. This workshop intends to sharpen the skills of information professionals to present information effectively using internet technology. *Web Portal Designing* Web portal is a web site that functions as a point of access to information in the World Wide Web. A portal presents information from diverse sources in a unified way. This workshop will give hands on training to most of the activities involved in designing a library web portal. *Subject Gateways* Gateways are the Internet search tools to help people find resources on the Internet. They are Internet based services designed to help users locate high quality information that is available on the Internet. *Participants* The Workshop is primarily meant for: · Library and Information Science professionals · IT professionals and · Academicians The total in take would be 30 participants on first come first served basis. *Resource persons* Eminent resource persons will be invited from the reputed institutions in the country. * * *Important Dates* Registration starts 10th November, 2011 Registration closes 30th November, 2011 *Registration* There is a registration fee of Rs 500. Participants will be given a certificate on successful completion of the workshop. * * *Accommodation* Accommodation may be arranged on nominal tariffs for the participants in the University Guest House/near by hotels on first come first served basis. * * *About the Department of Library and Information Science, AMU, Aligarh* Department of Library and Information Science of Aligarh Muslim University is a premier institution in the field of Library and Information Science in India with a history that reaches back about sixty years. The foundation of the Department was laid way back in 1950-51 with the introduction of a 'Certificate Course in Library Science', by the then University Librarian, Padma Shri Prof. S. Bashiruddin. Encouraged by the success of the certificate course, late Prof. S. Bashiruddin introduced 'Bachelor of Library Science' in 1958-59 with full time lecturers for the first time in the country. The Certificate course was discontinued in 1968-69. Subsequently, 'Master of Library Science' was introduced in 1970-71. Another pioneering step taken by the department in the year 1986-87 was the introduction of Library Science as a subsidiary subject at B.A level in the Faculties of Arts and Social Science. Realizing the need and importance of research in the subject, the Department started M.Phil/Ph.D programmes since 1990-91. The teaching faculty of the department includes one Professor, three Associate Professors, two Assistant Professors, and two Guest Faculties. Using the modern ICT facilities in the dept, the faculty members are engaged in active research on various aspects of LIS. At present, the department has two ongoing projects sponsored by ICSSR and Department of Science and Technology Govt. of India. In the past also few UGC sponsored projects have been successfully completed. The guild of academic activities such as conferences, seminars, workshops and extramural lectures of eminent scholars have always been regular features of the department. * * *About DST Funded Project* Department of Science & Technology (DST) was established in May 1971, with the objective of promoting new areas of Science & Technology and to play the role of a nodal department for organizing, coordinating and promoting S&T activities in the country. Department of Library and Information Science, Aligarh Muslim University is developing Subject Information Gateway in Information Technology (SIGIT), first full-fledged subject information gateway exclusively in the field of Information Technology (IT) fully funded by DST. SIGIT comprehensively covers all areas of Information Technology like e-journals, e-books, IT schools and their curriculum links, databases, free as well as open source software, research projects, electronic theses and dissertations, programming languages, forthcoming conferences/workshops, fellowships and grants, training programmes in IT, etc. and it indents to cater the information needs of the specialists who are directly or indirectly concerned with IT as a subject or an activity.
