Dear friends, I would like to send out this appeal to all of you residing in Karnataka to ask if you would be willing to be involved in a programme of mentoring high school libraries in your vicinity You may be required to pay a visit to the school about once a month. As a member of the Karnataka Knowledge Commission, I have been closely associated with "Arivu" , an initiative which covered 225 high schools in helping them set up active open libraries in their schools. In this regard, they were provided with open racks, a carefully selected set of books in Kannada and English, along with a user-friendly manual written especially for this purpose. In addition we held workshops with the participating teachers where we helped them raise questions and generate ideas towards running an open library with the active help of the students themselves. The schools have now embarked on this programme about a month ago. We feel that to make this an effective model, monthly visits by mentors would be essential. Therefore the idea was to gather a pool of resource people who would be willing to give some of their valuable time to perform this invaluable task and serve the profession as well. Our plan is to link each school with a library professional who is based in the same district. Please contact me for any clarification and to respond with your name, place of residence and availability so that we may begin the process of linking schools with mentors.
