The ambitious scheme envisaging provision of books worth Rs.10, 000 to every government school was inaugurated at a simple function in the Durbar Hall of the Aiwan-E-Shashi guesthouse. Though the beneficiary schools are from Gurmitkal assembly constituency in Yadgir taluk the function was organised at the far off district head quarter. Foundation Chairpersons Sudha Murthy symbolically handed over five kits each containing 144 books costing about Rs.10, 000 to the head masters of five government schools of Gurmitkal in the presence of Minister for Water Resources and Transport Mallikarjun Kharge. Gurmitkal is the assembly constituency of Kharge from where he has been elected to the assembly for a record eight times in a row. There are 169 government lower, higher and secondary schools in Gurmnitkal constituency and all of them will be getting free books under the Infosys Foundation scheme. The Foundation also offered sewing machines to five poorest of the poor women all hailing from Gurmitkal in an effort to bring about economic stability to their families. Handing over the book-kits, Sudha Murthy declared that all government Kannada medium secondary schools will be given book-kits in Gulbarga district in a phased manner. She wanted teachers to evince interest in inculcating reading habits among children so that children can develop love for reading in their life. Mallikarjun Kharge lauded Infosys Foundation for taking up educational charities on a large scale.
