1. I too agree with views expressed by Dr. Koteswara Rao & Dr. Guruprasad about the indecent remarks made by our professional colleague. If his concerns are about number of PhDs at a time from the same dept..., it is common and acceptable for universities to have collective Vivas.. it serves two purpose.. on one hand it is economy to university and on the other it assures more participation from audience. Presenting doctoral findings and defending in front of larger audience is definitely a welcoming trend. This is more encouraging for research scholars to see more people rather than negligible number as audience.
2. If Mr. Bhaktavatsala's anger is about number of candidates from same guide... there is every possibility that the thesis might have been submitted at different point of time and viva might have been scheduled together for convenience. It may also happen that all the candidates might have registered at the same time and naturally the submission might have happened simultaneously. With University's time schedule for doctoral work, most of them might stick to complete the research within the given time. If registration happens at time, submissions also may happen at the same time.
3. If his concern is about how one can guide all candidates together, research work is based on work progress by individual researchers. If candidates do their homework properly, definitely a guide can supervise many together.
4. if his concerns are due to personal grievances against individual researcher our guide... professionals should not use public platform to express their anger or throw mud on other. The blames reflect the mindset of a complaining person against an individual or department.
5. along with others I too request all our esteemed LIS professionals that " let us exhibit our behavior more professionally and uphold the value of our profession" our criticisms on own profession pulls us down and we become laughing issue for others.
I feel, collective presentations will benefit researchers, audience as well as University.
Knowingly or unknowingly, Mr. Bhaktavatsala made members to read mails and express their feelings.

On the one hand it definitely it is a matter that DLIS, University of Mysore witnessed an intellectual event of such magnitude of five research scholars being awarded the Ph.D. degrees.
As a former research scholar it is indeed a matter of great pride seeing the scholarly achievements of DLIS, University of Mysore.
On the other hand, it saddens me a lot to read the "Tailpiece" of the message which is written in absolute bad taste. It appears to an outsider like one pitching against the other in order to derive some sadistic pleasure.
Such "Tailpiece" statements can jeopardize the reputation of DLIS.
The views expressed by the sender of this message are purely his personal

Congratulations to the Five Some MyDLIS PhD scholars!
It was celebrations time at the Department of Library and Information Science (MyDLIS), University of Mysore, Mysore, when four PhD scholars appeared for the defense of their theses one after the other on a same day ie: 26 Nov'2013 and another one on 23rd of December 2013. Totally five PhD are awarded in a span of almost a month (from 26/11/13 to 23/12/2013) which is unusual at MyDLIS. The 2013 year end, lucky five are: 1. Dr.Devendra (Guide: Prof. Khaiser Nikam) 2. Dr.Jaykumara (Guide: Prof. Khaiser Nikam) 3. Dr. Vinod Kumar B L (Guide: Prof. Khaiser Nikam) 4. Smt Shanaz Kademzadeh (Guide: Prof. Khaiser Nikam) & 5. Dr. Bhojaraju Gunjal (Guide: Prof. Shalini R Urs):
Dr. Devendra worked on " Attitudes of Law Library Users towards the use of OPAC and Web OPAC in South India: A Study" Dr. Jaykumara worked on " Attitudes of Young Adults towards Public Library Services in Karnataka: A Study" Dr.Vinod Kumar B L worked on "Design and Development of Information Support System for Yogic Sciences with emphasis on Knowledge Organization" Dr. Bhojaraju Gunjal worked on "Knowledge Organization Systems In Digital Libraries: A Case of ETDs " Smt. Shanaz Kademzadeh worked on " Collection Development in Scientific and Research Institute Libraries in Iran: A Study"
The presentations were scholarly and the new MLISc seminar hall was full with all the Faculty Members, Students, Research Scholars and invitees. Nearly 100 people attended the Internal Open Viva Voce. In general there was good interaction. The candidates answered questions satisfactorily. The issues raised in the course of interaction will go a long way in further improving the existing work of the scholars and act as tips to those who are going to complete their PhD work shortly. The external examiners were Prof. B S Maheshwarappa; Prof.B D Kumbar; Prof.NeelaDeshpande; Prof. Md. Shafi, Prof. D K Gupta. Prof. D Chandran and Prof.V T Kamble. All of them did a splendid job by critically evaluating the work and appreciating the strengths of the theses.
Tailpiece !!
For the healthy competitors it was an inspiring moment and for the envious it was the story of "Grapes are Sour" and for the Cynic it was time to" grouse and grumble"
The Report is approved by the Board of Studies Chairman (Prof. Khaiser Nikam) and is prepared purely for academic purpose.
