They must be a part of society's thinking about how we develop social as well as information networks. Information has to be served to those who need it. Libraries offer both young and old people a safe haven for exploring new ideas and linking them to a wider world. Libraries promote a broader world view among users of all ages. With the advent of information and communication technologies and the automation of libraries, information and knowledge have become a global phenomenon. Under these challenging circumstances, the role of librarian is totally changed. He/she is now viewed as an information manager, information navigator, cyber engineer, information disseminator, knowledge manager, etc. The specific way of managing scientific and technical information has become a major task for those who are expected to select, process, handle and transmit information. The currency of the information as well as the facilities for a rapid exchange of information are needed among scholars; scientists and even ordinary citizens. There has therefore been change in the goal and policy of those who are engaged in this task at different levels. Private organizations and Trusts/Endowments have come forward to help in promoting and encouraging those who are engaged in this task as stated above. Recognition and honour are to be given to those who apart from serving the profession, help in motivating those who want to achieve excellence in the field. The Trust of Prof Kaula Endowment for Library and information Science has completed 25 years. It is our pleasure to state that the tiny sapling cultivated by the Board of Trustees in March 1975, has grown into a mighty tree through the efforts of the members of the Trust and their services. In fact it was Dr P S G Kumar who had initiated the work of the Trust which is now well known all over the world. I record with appreciation the programme and work of the Trust particularly in selection of distinguished experts from different countries and from our own country for the two prestigious Gold medals instituted by the Trust. A period of 25 years is a milestone in the history of the Trust. It is our hope and prayer that the Trust may grow further with innovative and expanded activities in the coming years to enable it to celebrate its Golden Jubilee when professionals from future generations would be able to appreciate and benefit from its activities. The contents of this brief report are given overleaf. We would welcome any suggestion for the extension of the work of the Endowment.
