Dear Friends I read a news item that said that the Tamilnadu Government recently nationalised literary works of 27 authors and paid a compensation of nearly 1.65 crores. I request knowledgable people to tell me what does this mean? One thing I can guess is that the author's wards get financial compensation and the objective appears to be promotion and preservation of Tamil Literature for posterity. How is this achieved?
From the copyright angle, do the titles go out of copyright such that anyone may copy without any further royalties being payable?
How about commercially successful authors like Sujatha? Can they (the wards) refuse to be bought by government? How does the common man benefit?
