I am saddened to know that Prof. M.A. Gopinath has passed away. Let
me pray for his soul and may his soul be placed in eternal peace.
I know Prof. M.A. Gopinath only through his seminal works. I have
seen and heard him only on few occasions. As a student, two decades
back, when I saw his name in the title page of Colon Classification, I
was eager to meet him on some occasion. My dream fulfilled when he
visited the Department of Library and Information Science, University
of Mysore for a conference. When he talked to me, I felt very happy.
I heard many stories about him. I was told he joined S.R. Ranganathan
at his 16 years and worked with him for more than 3 decades. The
Library Profession should be indebted to Gopinath also as he is the
person, I was told, took dictation notes from Ranganathan on all this
seminal works. Working with Ranganathan, a task master, for such a
long time itself is a credit to anybody.
Let the youngsters be motivated by the works of M.A. Gopinath and take
the profession to further heights.
