The SALIS journals release function was held on 6 March 2010 at ICSA Seminar Hall, Egmore, Chennai, between 6 P.M and 8.P.M.

 

The programme was started with the invocation by Mrs. Kamatchi, Librarian, NKR College of Education for Women.

 

Mr. A. Hariharan, President, SALIS in his welcome address, highlighted the various objectives of SALIS, programmes being organized, publications of SALIS, etc. He also mentioned on the SALIS honoring the professionals by way of awards, certificate of appreciations, etc. He mentioned the efforts taken by SALIS in filling up the vacant posts of Librarians in Government Colleges in Tamil Nadu.

 

Mr. Hariharan also requested the Presidents of the Madras Library Association (MALA), Tamil Nadu Library Association (TLA), Head Dept Library and Information Science,  SALIS, other senior professionals  to take up the issue of appointing professional Librarians in schools to effectively disseminate the library services to the school children on one hand and also to solve the unemployment problem faced by Librarians on the other hand.

 

A representation on the same (appointing librarians in schools in phased manner) was handed over by the Presidents of MALA, TLA and SALIS to the Director, Public Library later in the function. They requested the Director, Public Library to use his good office to do the needful.

 

Dr. Harish Chandra, Librarian, IIT Madras and Editor-in-chief of the SALIS Journal of Library and Information Science (SJLIS) briefed on the journal and spoke on the various activities of SALIS.

 

Mr. M. Mandhirasalam, Sr. Dy. Librarian, KCT, Coimbatore & Editor, SALIS Journal of Information Management and Technology (SJIMT) spoke on the scope and objectives of SJIMT.

 

 

Mr. Karl Pechatscheck. Director, Goethe-Institut, Max Mueller Bhavan, Chennai who is the chief guest of the function, released the SALIS journals and delivered his address. He narrated the role of library and LIS professionals and appreciated the efforts taken by SALIS in organizing various programmes for the benefit of the library professionals and the society.

 

 

Mr. G. Arivoli, Director, Directorate of Public Libraries, Chennai received the first copy  of both the SALIS journals and in his special address, spoke on various efforts taken by the Government of Tamil Nadu for the  upcoming Anna Centenary Library in Chennai. He also pointed out that the Government is showing keen interest in uplifting the library and its activities. He also informed the gathering that the Tamil Nadu Government is shortly announcing the recruitment notice for around 200 posts for the Anna Centenary Library. He also mentioned that the vacancies in the public libraries will be filled up soon.

 

Mr. Karl Pechatscheck and Mr. G. Arivoli presented mementoes and shawls to the retired professionals and Ph.D. awardees.

Mrs. Vijaya K Sundaram appreciated the initiatives of SALIS.

 

Dr.  R. Ramasamy suggested publishing more articles on public libraries.

 

Prof. A. Amudhavalli stressed on the need for quality research and also suggested to adopt strict referring practice before publication of articles in journals so as to maintain the quality of the journal.

 

Prof. Manorama Srinath stressed on the need for co-operation among the professionals and congratulated SALIS for its activities.

 

Mr. N. Avadaiappan expressed the need for abolishing the Professor-in-charge post in University Libraries to make the University Librarians more competent in library development and also in discharging the library services. He also stressed on the need for appointment of professional librarians in schools.

 

G. Krishnamoorthy spoke on the status of the librarians and requested to change the designations.

 

Dr. K. Nithyanandam appreciated the initiatives of SALIS in honoring the professionals.

 

Dr.S. Surianarayanan suggested appointing librarians from primary schools onwards.

 

Dr. S. Muralidhar suggested starting a School of Excellence to train the LIS professionals at Anna Centenary Library.

The programme ended with National Anthem.

 

A few publications of SALIS were presented to the Director, Pubic Library for the Anna Centenary Library.

 

Around 100 professionals from Chennai, Tirunelveli, Tiruchi, Coimbatore, Erode and Karaikudi participated in the function.
