Project Management in Library and Information Center
Project Management is a method and a set of techniques based on the accepted
principles of management used for planning, estimating, and controlling work
activities to reach a desired end result on time, within budget and according
to specification. Projects have definite end points and temporary in nature but
operations are ongoing, continuing and indefinite.
Various Project Management techniques are available such as PERT, CPM, Gantt
chart etc. PERT/CPM Techniques are very versatile techniques available for
exploitation by Information Managers/librarians, and the executives. PERT/CPM
minimizes the delays, interruptions and the conflicts in the whole functions of
the system. Now Open source project management softwares are available, which
can reduce human task, namely GanttProject, KPlatoOpen Workbench, DotProject
etc.
Project management is an almost unnatural act in libraries because libraries
are mainly transaction-based institutions, but again in libraries there are
many projects such as establishing a new service, implementing a new
technology, information gathering, weeding a collection, digitizing a
collection, installation of new equipments or facilities etc In this Seminar I
will focus on the role of Project Management in Library and Information Center
and application of CPM technique in acquisition section of a library.
