In the context of web, it is descriptive information that aids in the identification, description and location of networked resources. Metadata helps to locate useful information; it is also related to the vision of semantic web, which is an extension of the current web in which information is given a well-defined meaning enabling computer and people to work together in cooperation in a better fashion.
