**** * * * * *In sequel to* *Developing Sustainable Digital Libraries: Socio-Technical Perspective , 2010* ** ***Encyclopedia of Digital Libraries: Design and Development* An encyclopedia edited by Dr.Tariq Ashraf and Puja Anand Gulati University of Delhi, India To be published by IGI Global: http://www.igi-global.com/authorseditors/authoreditorresources/callforbookch... *LAST CALL FOR ARTICLES * *Final Submission Deadline: December 31, 2011* *Introduction* * * The encyclopedia commissioned by IGI Global attempts to capture a wide spectrum of issues involved in the process of developing digital libraries and collect the latest advancements and research on new processes, developments, and technologies for the dissemination, access, and analysis of information through digital libraries -serving as a stand-alone source for anyone requiring an instant update on the many innovations that have taken place over the past few years. It is proposed to be a type of reference work, a compendium holding information on all aspects of digital libraries, made up of individual articles written by experts on the various topics and giving a broad overview and background information and referring to a wide range of digital library practices throughout the world, filling the gap in currently available digital library literature The volumes will provide an articulated framework for analysis to help identify and understand the ever-changing nature and progressive development of digital libraries. Taking an all-encompassing overview of relevant issues from the evolution of information storage systems to the future prospects for digital libraries, the contributors are expected to provide a lucid insight to the field investigating the complex interaction of library organization and technological achievements, with special emphasis on how things are done. To this end, we propose to cover a broad range of topics, including digitization of collections, information storage and retrieval systems, indexing and classification of data, among others. Divided into three volumes, it aims to look at how a digital library is designed, giving due attention to the technological requirements; explores the status of digital libraries in the information world and their relationship with other disciplines such as economics and law giving a brief account on the evolution of digital libraries, discussing details about specific aspects . Devoted to an examination of technological issues related to the storage of digital information in various formats (e.g. text, image, sound and other multimedia), as well as knowledge representation schemes, networks and distribution, and representation of information, chapters would provide extensive theoretical and practical coverage of issues concerning the social context of digital libraries: usability and preservation, economic and legal aspects, scientific applications, and future prospects. Thus encyclopedia will attempt to make a significant contribution to the field, providing a good reading material for a ground-breaking, multifaceted investigation into the socio-technical ecologies of computers, people, and information, serving as a detailed technical treatise on digital library design and implementation'; and is 'focused upon designing and developing digital libraries', presenting a clear description and overview of all the many different facets of a digital library. Each chapter will succinctly cover its aims and spells out the many considerations that need to be taken into account when planning a digital library. It would be well referenced, so that readers wishing to delve more deeply are able to. It is a work that can be read through and also used as a reference tool in its own right. *Objective of the Encyclopedia* * * The *Encyclopedia of Digital libraries * will provide a compendium of terms, definitions and explanations of concepts, processes and acronyms.
