Documentation Research & Training Centre (DRTC) Indian Statistical Institute 8th Mile, Mysore Road, RVCE Post Bangalore, 560 059 COLLOQUIUM-6 (2017-2019) Title: Evolution and Trends in Knowledge Organisation System Abstract Knowledge organization system (KOS) is a generic term which is used for referring to a wide range of items (e.g. subject headings, thesauri, classification schemes and ontologies), which have been conceived to represent and organize the multidimensional, multilingual, and cross-cultural knowledge domains with respect to different purposes. They are characterized by different specific structures and functions, by varied ways of relating to technology, and used in a plurality of contexts by diverse communities. The underlying common factor among the different KOSs is that they have been designed to support the organization of knowledge and information in order to make their management and retrieval easier. With the advent of World Wide Web and the Digital Library, in the 21st century, the emerging knowledge in KOS has contributed significantly towards improving the ability to collect and organizing information by the integration of formal and technological aspects, such as the concepts of interoperability, user interface, visualization etc. In this presentation, the relationship of Knowledge Organisation with KOS will be explored through the analysis of various stages in the evolution of KOS, major types of KOS, applications of KOS, and the various issues and challenges involved in developing and implementing KOS. The emerging trends in KOS based on the latest research in the overall development of KO in the digital and networked environment will also be briefly reviewed. This presentation, in general, will attempt to provide an understanding of the core nature of KOS in the development of a general semantic framework which intends to encompass all knowledge.
