One option that we have been using is to send the list of books that we want
to few vendors and ask them to indicate the best possible discount and the
time period of delivery. Our terms - payment against bill (no advance
payment), bank rate on the date of the bill. We have been able to get
discounts ranging from 20% to 30%

Regarding database of suppliers and the publishers they represent, I would
like to inform , that British library has published such online directory,
for British publishers.
The directory published by National Book Trust during World Bookfair, 2004
has listed all the suppliers, who participated in the fair, along with the
names of publishers they represent.
Many publishers from US are not represented in India. I wonder whether
there is any supplier to import books published by ALA. If there are no
authorised stockists or representatives, then postage will be too high as
mentioned by Mr.Chandra. Barnes and Noble, whom I met recently in US are
willing to supply books to Indian libraries if the business offered is US
$5000/- per year. They also offer about 20% discount.
We at IGIDR have prepared database of suppliers in the area of social
sciencs. The data can be provided in ISO2709 format for those who are
interested.

I think this theme is an very important one as it has to be examined in
the digital environment. Curriculum development, practical training in
knowledge management database creation, etc are required

Dear professionals,
I think, some of professional associations or society should take the
initiative to design & develop the compressive databases/search engines
which have the linkage with all major foreign publications. The databases
could have the alert feature means as & when any publisher update their
website, immediately the alert service inform their client libraries.
In regard of exchange rate, I think the GOC rate is ok but Good offices
Committee also should change their system and try to update themselves
with help and associate with the Banks, Libraries Associations and other
relevant societies.
Best regards

The second largest library of India took 8 years and over 200 crores to
build. How many regular users are there? How many Staffs are working?
Collection of the library and all these you'll find in an article
published in Outlook July 12 issue. Title of this article is "NO DOG-EARS

If you want to buy one title and are bothered about high freight and
service charges, my suggestion is - abandon your local mortar and brick
vendor and buy the book from a online vendor, how about amazon ?

Dear Mr. Sadasivan
Thanks for your e mail. In my opinion it is not proper that the Downloading
should be treated as an Indicator of the quality of Papers. also it is not
clear from the attached list which are the the second and third highest
downloaded papers that have been authored by the scientists of your
lab.however, a final decision about their quality can be taken only after a
citation study of these papers. I may mention that of the 50 papers listed
in the site you have refered 14 are review articles, which are cited more
frequently than other articles.
if you have any other query, pl. feel free to contact.

Dear Lis-Forum Members,
The Impact Factor of journals/publications and Citation Counts of papers
are well known indicators of their quality/acceptance. Despite the current
debate worldwide on its acceptance / reservations, these indicators are
still widely accepted by the peers, professionals and funding agencies,
etc. , presumably due to the absence of an effective alternative mode of
rating.
Now a new concept is emerging - as seen publicised and promoted by certain
publishers and authors : An Indicator based on the frequency/amount of
downloads of a paper !
For instance, the international journal " Biotechnology & Applied
Biochemistry" (Publisher : Portland Press on behalf of IUMBM) has widely
publicised in their website as follows:
' Top 50 Downloaded Papers: The Papers listed below are the 50 most
frequently downloaded Papers for the 12 months to the end of May 2004...'
(The list contains HTML Full Text & PDF downloadable options too)
The details can be accessed at URL :
http://bab.portlandpress.com/bab50.htm
This has triggered a debate among the scientists (of my Lab) in favour of
and against the concept of "Downloading as an Indicator on the quality of
Papers". (Incidentally, the second and third highest downloaded papers
happened to have been authored by one of our own Scientists!)
I seek the comments/views of our professionals, especially the
biblio/sciento-metricians .
