Internet giant Google Inc. has launched its SMS or text-based search service for local information such as restaurants and movie timings in four cities in India.

The company is offering Google SMS, the text based search for mobile users on beta or test mode in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore, allowing
subscribers to get information on local business listings that are indexed on the net by the search engine.

“It is from the same content (on the net),” said Vinay Goel, head of products at Google India Pvt. Ltd in Bangalore.

Mobile users can get local information by sending a query through a short code—54664. They will pay between 80 paise and Rs3 for each such query.
