Dear Members, This mail is with regard to the interview experience shared by Ms.Sri Laxmi: Once again the role of LIS professionals has been raised. Whenever such mails are posted to the forum, we get mails from other members of the forum asking our library professional associations to do something in this regard. I think our associations have restricted their role to organizing conferences/seminars etc. Our associations have bee requested many times through this forum. Are they listening our voice? Our associations should workout with UGC, NAAC, AICTE and related bodies to bring out some norms/guidelines as regards to the salaries of the LIS professionals in College libraries. Following is just a typical example of how interviews was conducted: Once my senior friend went for a interview for the post of librarian in some college in Bangalore. It was a interview of a kind. One of the interview committee member told him that he will be paid Rs.2000 pm and he is recruited here till the NAAC committee visit is over. That's all. No questions about his qualifications, experience etc. It has been seen that at the time of interview who so ever demands less salary will be recruited. We have innumerable examples of such typical interviews. Can anybody tell me how many college libraries have a permanent librarian post? How well paid the college librarians are? The need of the hour is that our so called library professional associations should come together with NAAC, UGC and AICTE and bring out some norms/guidelines as regards to the pay scale of library professionals. When I was studying MLISC my professor often use to say that "WE ARE IN SUCH A NOBLE PROFESSION WHERE WE ARE ALWAYS AT THE END OF GIVING, WHO ELSE OTHER THAN ALMIGHTY GOD, WHO IS ALWAYS AT THE END OF GIVING". It should not mean that we keep on serving our users without getting due credit and respectable salary........ These are my personal views and are not intended to critisize anybody.
