iSIM-NIFT Training Workshop on Digital Libraries, July 31 August 5, 2006 - A brief report - The International School of Information Management (iSIM), University of Mysore, ran a Training Workshop on Digital Libraries for the LIS professionals working in the National Institute of Information Technology (NIFT) during 31st July 3006 to 5th August 2006. Fifteen Information professionals from different NIFT centers across the country participated in the workshop. The objective of the Workshop was to equip participants with the knowledge and skill sets required to build digital libraries in the domain of Fashion Technology. The key topics of engagement in the six day Training Workshop included: · Roadmap for NIFT Resource Centers · Issues and challenges of building digital libraries · Understanding the Digitization Process scanning, OCRing and conversion · Dublin Core Metadata Standards, VRA 3.0 Standards for Visual Culture and VRA 3.0 based Cataloguing Standards for Fashion Collections. · Mapping and cross walking between MARC 21, Dublin Core and VRA Core 3.0 · Creating Databases in CDS/ISIS employing VRA 3.0 standards · Installing Green Stone Digital Library Software 2.7W and building collections of fashions · Converting CDS/ISIS Databases to GSDL · Working with DSpace 1.2.2 on Windows The Programme delivery was hand-on, each candidate with a computer and Internet connection. During the course of this training programme, the participants identified and selected images of Indian fashions, catalogued them using the VRA Core 3.0 based cataloguing standards, designed and developed a database in CDS/ISIS, configured the database into a digital library deploying the GSDL. Participants also built collections and communities in DSpace environment as well. The programme concluded with Shri B. J. Hosmath, IFS, Registrar, University of Mysore delivering the valedictory address and distributing certificates to participants. The Training Programme was coordinated by Prof. Shalini R.
