Colloquium 3
(2024-2026)

Title: "Practice, Theory and Research: A Multilateral Relation in LIS”

Abstract

This colloquium will explore the dynamic relationship between theory and practice in Library and Information Science (LIS), highlighting how both inform and influence each other. It will trace the historical evolution of library services and examine the emergence of foundational theories in the field, demonstrating how interdisciplinary research from areas like information technology, computer science, management, and economics has shaped LIS practices. The discussion will delve into the impact of these theories on library services, with a particular focus on the gap between theoretical research and the quality of library services in India. It will also address the challenges faced by Indian libraries in applying the latest research, such as infrastructure limitations, lack of resources, and economic barriers.

Additionally, the colloquium will highlight how research in LIS can extend beyond libraries, influencing everyday life through technologies like Google’s information retrieval system, Amazon’s recommendation engine, and OpenAI’s large language model. The conclusion will emphasize the importance of research in advancing LIS practices and services, arguing that despite the challenges in bridging theory and practice in India, research remains a guiding force for the future of the field. By looking at both the historical context and the current challenges, the colloquium aims to underscore the critical role that research will continue to play in shaping the future of libraries and information services globally.
