About the Speaker
Ludo Waltman is a scholar in scientometrics and research evaluation. He is widely known for co-developing VOSviewer, a leading bibliometric mapping tool, and for his contributions to responsible research assessment and open research information initiatives.
He is a driving force behind the CWTS Leiden Ranking and other international endeavours that advance open, transparent and responsible use of research information.
Abstract
Scientometric analyses have traditionally been performed using proprietary databases such as Web of Science and Scopus. However, the field of scientometrics is currently in a transition from proprietary to open databases. In this talk I will discuss this transition and will reflect on the opportunities it offers and the risks it involves.
I will talk about the way in which the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at Leiden University in the Netherlands is currently transitioning from proprietary to open databases. CWTS has four decades of experience in the field of scientometrics. It is currently in the process of replacing closed proprietary databases by open alternatives. The CWTS Leiden Ranking Open Edition, based on data from OpenAlex, demonstrates the new way of working of the center.
I will also outline the broader context in which the transition to open databases is taking place. In particular, I will highlight the role of the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information, an influential global initiative promoting openness of scientometric data and other types of research information.
