Dear friends
I work as a college librarian in an affiliated college under the university of calcutta. It is an old as well as renowned college in kolkata.I was selected in this post as substantive basis through West Bengal College Service Commission (WBCSC) . It was the first batch where college librarians were selected via WBCSC having same eligibility criteria like lecturers. In our recommendation letter from WBCSC as well as appointment letter issued by the college it was mentioned we being recruited as per West Bengal Teachers Act (security and services), 1978.But after joining in the college, I found that myself is being treated virtually as Non-vacational Non-teaching staff. However, with a great surprise , seen that I am also the member of teachers council (TC). May be for some election related vested interest as every now & then college authority says that I should not be the member of the TC. After 1 year, even
juniors lecturers were confirmed in the service but still after 1.8 years I did not get any confirmation. Because I am librarian and and lone in the college and librarians have no service rule till today. So I may be treated as authority wishes to treat me.Authority also says orally that before giving the recommendation letter it may be possible that WBCSC did not find any suitable paper and that is why they gave it in teachers recommendation forrmat mistakenly. I prayed humbly to the college authority to respect my recommendation letter and my appointment letter so that I that I can get official equal official treatment from the college.Teachers always get 1 day study leave and it is as college manual. We don't get no study leave. We do not have any PhD increament. But the teachers got awarded with me , everybody is getting increments. I won't get as my designation is librarian.Unfortunately, I did Phd with UGC(JRF) NET fellowship .
Now it 's got no meaning at all.Research degree is not rewarded here as my designation is librarian. There is neither any study leave any facility like lecturers. I have stated considering myself that I am a lesser human being( teachers are greater ones) as my designation is librarian. In this context I want to mention that in an interview in a central university an well known prof. asked me -Why do always use Dr. before your name? I was taken a back for a while then I explained it properly but possibly he was not convinced, as my designation was librarian and he was repected teacher. List of is disparities will not stop. And, I think it will continue till our perception as well as our respected teachers perception towards this profession does not change.
I have some questions to our respected policy makers are following:
1. why college librarian/AL in University will have the same qualification when they are not getting equal facility
2. Why Librarians are non-vacational. Logic supporting towards non-vacational are very illogical as teachers require advancement of knowledge but librarians do not require it because they are not more than a mere dignified book keeper.
3. Equal qualification must be accompanied by equal status regarding all facilities as per malhotra committee report. Equal pay is not everything. We, librarians are being discriminated in every possible cases and underestimated and undermined every now and then. If this trend goes on and on...on....on qualified and brilliant students will never come to this doomed and cursed career. Please do something concrete to make it meaningful and respectable career option for future generation.

StumbleUpon, a web browser plugin, is a good addition for librarians in
finding out websites rated as good. It can be downloaded from
www.stumbleupon.com
It allows its users to discover good web pages, online books, journal sites,
photos, and videos rated by the community of 5 million stumble upon users.
Web pages appear when the user clicks the "Stumble!" button on the
browser's
toolbar. The display of web pages will be normally based on the user's
preference profile, unless any subject keyword ( see the drop down menu
under 'All') is provided in the keyword box .To find out good websites
on
any subject, type the subject in the keyword box and click the
"stumble!"
button.
Stumbleupon toolbar versions exist for Mozilla Firefox and Internet
Explorer.

Yes, Firefox is one of my favorite software applications.
Out of these 2,000 add-ons or Plug-ins, there are few which are useful
for librarians and library users. You may like to see "100 Essential
Firefox Add-Ons for Librarians" by Jessica Merritt. There are some
more lists of add-ons by librarians. Like the one of Teri Vogel - My
Favorite Firefox Extensions and he one by Jessamyn West - Pimp My
Firefox. .
However, there are few, which are special for librarians. LibX is one
such plug-in. Libraries can create their own edition of LibX to
provide to access to their resource catalogues through LibX add-on.
Around 422 academic and public libraries have already done so.
Another interesting Plug-in is Zotero. It is an easy-to-use Firefox
extension to help collection, management and cite Internet sources.
There is a nice tutorial available for using LibX and Zotero in
combination.

Dear Mr. Akash,
I think UGC has not stated Librarian as a teacher anywhere. But the pay
sacle and qualification is at par with that of lecturer/reader and professor
for college librarians, university asst.librarian/Deputy librarians and
University librarians respectively.
In Maharashtra the Maharashtra Universities act 1994 has included college
librarians,university asst.librarian/Deputy librarians and University
librarians in the definition of teachers.
