Dear Library Lovers, 1. GLIC We are happy to inform you that a village library titled GUNDRAMPALLY LIBRARY AND INFORMATION CENTRE (GLIC) is being started in Gundrampally Village (Chityal Mandal, Nalgonda district, Andhra Pradesh) in the first fortnight of April 2006. This initiative is being supported by the Organisation for the Protection of Libraries, (OPLib), a library advocacy group based in Hyderabad as part of its 100 Village/School Libraries Within a Year project. Already 500+ books have been received as donation from various places throughout Andhra Pradesh and several individuals had sponsored annual subscriptions for daily newspapers and magazines. The local panchayat had offered to provide free accommodation to the library and a school teacher had come forward to serve as its honorary librarian. He promised to keep the library open for a couple of hours both in the morning and evenings. A group of educated youth led by Mr Srinivas of Gemini Television are working very hard to place GLIC on a firm foundation. GLIC urgently requires two glass paned steel almirahs for keeping its book collection. The cost is likely to be about Rs.15000. OPLib appeals to all library lovers to help GLIC in the purchase of steel almirahs. GLIC also plans to provide ICT-based information services to the villagers and train them on Internet searching and on text/image transmission for getting answers to their local problems. A computer system along with a digital camera, speakers, modem, etc., is also required for this proposed library. OPLib solicits donations from you for the purchase of a new computer system and the cost is likely to be Rs.35,000. If you have any old computer systems to spare, they are also welcome. These systems would be utilized to provide hands-on experience to the villagers. We hope that the LIS professional fraternity, library associations and library lovers would respond to this appeal positively and lend their helping hand in the form of cash donations/books/magazines, etc. 2. KANAKAVALLI MEMORIAL LIBRARY We are pleased to inform you that a School Library is being started by OPLib at Balakarmika Vikasa Kendram, Residential Bridge Centre (Indian Red Cross Society), Yadagirigutta, Nalgonda district in April 2006. This School provides education and hostel facility to 68 street children (Classes 1 to 5, mother tongue Telugu) who are below the poverty line and children of local sex workers. The main objective is to prevent these children of sex workers from taking up their parents profession. Already we have received a donation of Rs.5000 from Ms. Geetha of NISC and a small book rack and 70 childrens books have been purchased with this amount. This library is being named in memory of her mother Late Smt. Penmetsa Kanakavalli Tayaru. Smt. Kanakavalli is daughter of Sri Bhupati Raju Tirupati Raju, founder of Kumudavalli Library (West Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh.) regarded as one of the greatest heritage libraries. Shri Tirupati Raju is revered as the Bhishmacharya of public library movement in Andhra Pradesh. It is a matter of immense joy that grace from this selfless library stalwart continues to flow through his children. OPLib appeals for donations to Kanakavalli Memorial Library in the form of cash/childrens books/ work tables/chairs, computer system, etc. Computer Systems for OPLib Finally, OPLib needs three computer systems , one for Andhra (Visakhapatnam), Rayalaseema (Tirupati) and Telangana (Hyderabad) region of Andhra Pradesh, to manage its operations effectively and efficiently. Any help (either new or old systems) in this regard would be greatly appreciated.
