It is very sad to know about passing away of Prof. F.W.Lancaster an eminent personality in LIS for his vision and work. I am personally acquainted with professor Lancaster since the days when he came to INSDOC as an expert to conduct a UNESCO Workshop on Thesaurus construction. His epoch making book on Vocabulary control in information retrieval is afundamental book on this subject. His another contribution is evaluation of MEDLARS which he carried out with Ms Emily Gallup Fien who was my guide during Fulbright Fellowship.When I asked him about the book on Towards a Paperless Society, He said it may not happen but I have raised the issue to trigger thinking amongst the professionals. He visited in India a number of times on different assignments. His main contribution according to me is that his writing which is is easy to understand language.Whenever I read his book even now I find always a different idea and imagination. Las ti9me I met him Urbana Champaign when I went there as a Fulbright scholar. It is on my reccommendation he admitted on e of my INSDOC student as his research Fellow. His research, writings, and teachings have earned him the highest honor in the profession . F.W. Lancaster excelled at many fronts as as scholar, educator, mentor, and writer. He visited India (Indian Statistical Institute), 1991 as Fulbright scholar and spent lot of time in the library (ISIBC) Recipient of the 1978, and 1992 award by the American Society for Information Science for the best book of the year on information science.
His classic books are bible for the LIS professions namely , Indexing and abstracting theory and practice, If you want Evaluate your library Services, Paper Less Society,Online Systems for Information Access and Retrieval .
