SVKM's NMIMS (Deemed University) presents One Day Seminar On Open Access / Archives Initiative December 17, 2005 MDP Centre, NMIMS Mumbai Seminar Coordinator Vrushali Rane Librarian librarian@nmims.edu Rationale One of the effects of Internet is that the dissemination of scientific publications has migrated to electronic formats. This has enabled, research results to be made available to anyone, anytime and anywhere in a new publishing framework, known as Open Access. Open Access archiving, open access journals and self archiving, different approaches of the same concept, promote a higher citation rate with an increased and enhanced research impact. This has challenged the commercial publishing industry and synergized researches of the developing world towards global participation. Despite widespread agreement among academics that OA would be the optimal distribution mode for publicly financed research results,such channel remains widely unexplored. Widespread efforts of national and international organizations are in progress to enhance the implementation and usage of the open access movement. For Whom The seminar is designed for Librarians, Information Professionals, faculties and researchers, interested in effective dissemination of research contents. Content * Introduction to the program * Concept of OAI * OAI: History, Types, Benefits * OAI: Initiatives * Presentations on OAI * A case study : Kautilya: A institutional repository at IGIDR' * Self-Archiving * Discussion and Feedback * Action plan by each participant based on feedback * Closing remarks and participants evaluation of program Methodology Experienced professionals from Library and Information Science area will conduct the session. The workshop will be based on interactive discussions using lectures, presentations and various online demonstrations. The classroom atmosphere will be informal and interactive. Date December 17, 2005 (Saturday) Time 9.30am - 5.30pm Registration 9.30am - 10.00am Fees Participation fees is Rs. 500/- on a non - residential basis. About the Faculty Ms. Sarika Sawant is a Lecturer at SHPT School of Library Science, SNDT Women's University. She is currently doing research and is an expert in OAI. She has an experience in handling Patents and retrieval of information related to it. Mr. Shyamprasad Pujar is an Assistant Librarian with Indira Gandhi Institute of Development and Research. At IGIDR he has an experience and expertise of OAI. He is actively involved in the implementation of Institutional Repository at IGIDR. He has several research papers to his credit. Ms. Smita Chandra is Librarian with Indian Institute of Geomagnetism. She has been actively involved with various projects of OAI. She was a IFLA OCLC fellow for 2001 and was a winner to the International paper contest of American Society of Information Science and Technology. She was also selected as a Training member of the Special Library Association for 2003-04.
