Dear Moderator: I request you to post this on lis-forum. Thanking you A. Ratnakar New Delhi ___________ There is an interesting editorial by Prof. Balaram in the latest issue of "Current Science" (25th Nov 2011) titled "Journals : Costs amd Impact Factor" in which he discusses about the publishing empire of Rupert Murdoch which is in news in recent times for wrong reasons, George Monbiot's article in Guardian dated 29 August 2011 and to one of his pet peeves (Balaram's words) - the costs of maintaining academic libraries where science journals ‘consume 65% of their budgets. He also touches upon Scientometrics and the Impact Factor issues. He concludes "As the number of scientific institutions grows rapidly in India, there is an urgent need to review journal pricing policies of commercial publishers and to adopt a more informed and tempered view of bibliometric indices in assessments of scientific research".
