University Grants Commission (UGC) on Friday appointed a committee to review the pay scales of teachers in universities and colleges. The new committee has been asked to recommend ways and means of attracting and retaining talented persons in the teaching profession, as well as developing research in the university system. The panel will also study what needs to be done for career advancement in teaching and other related activities in order to improve quality of higher education. The committee, to be headed by G K Chadha, former vice-chancellor of JNU and currently member of the PM’s Economic Advisory Council, will review implementation of the previous decision of the government/UGC under scheme of revision of pay scales approved for university and college teachers, librarians, physical education personnel and other academic staff.
