 I am Dr V.A. Sesha Giri Rao, author of the book titled Step by Step classification (SSC), A formula-based classification published by ESS ESS publications, New Delhi, India, in 2017.  Based on feedback from professors and experts in Library and Information Science, I made several improvements to the Step-by-Step Classification

 

The title of the SSC scheme has been changed to “Formula classification,” and it is published by the same publisher, ESS Publications, New Delhi, India. The book is available at

Some experts in the field have opined that this FC scheme applies to Knowledge Organisation (KO) and metadata because of their unique nature and formula classification.   In this regard, I humbly submit that it is beyond my knowledge of KO and Metadata, and of the usefulness of FC in those fields.  However, if the scheme is useful in those fields, being an author, it would be an immense pleasure for me.

 

The scheme is also considered a ‘Dual classification’ scheme, as it provides notations not only for subject content but also for physical forms of documents, such as leaves, clay tablets, metals, and electronic gadgets. Hence, the scheme will also be useful to the relevant libraries and museums.

 

In this regard, I am pleased to inform you that the IFLA Newsletter published an article on Formula classification in the December 2025 issue of New Books.
