FOURTH INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION - CALIBER 2006 Gulbarga University Library in collaboration with INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad (An Inter University Centre of University Grants Commission, New Delhi ) organized the Fourth International Convention CALIBER 2006 on the theme 'Dynamic Interoperable Web Based Information Systems" from February 2-4, 2006 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee Celebrations of the University. Pre-Convention tutorial `Building Digital Libraries using D-Space was also organized on February 2, 2006. It is the great honour for Gulbarga University Library to organize this International Convention for the first time in history of Libraries in Hyderabad Karnataka Region that too in Gulbarga city and also the CALIBER in Karnataka. The inaugural function commenced with Smiling, well attired, adorable invocation rendered by the well chosen Cultural Group, from V.G.Womens College, Gulbarga .. They invoked the Blessings of Goddess Saraswathi for the success of CALIBER 2006. Dr. Ravi Gaddagimath, Organising Secretary, CALIBER 2006 welcomed the Guests and Dignitaries in his own immaculate style and also briefed on the Convention. Dr. Arthur Smith, Director OCLC, Ohio , USA Inaugurated the Convention by lighting the Nanda Deepa. A brief prelude on CALIBER 2006 was given by Sri. K.Manoj Kumar, Scientist, D of INFLIBNET. The Convention volume by Dr. Rahul De, Hewlett-Packard Chair Professor, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore and Mr. S. Rajanna, Registrar, Gulbarga University were released. Mr, Rajanna, thanked INFLIBNET for giving an opportunity to Gulbarga University , Gulbarga to host CALIBER- 2006. The apprehension that in a remote place like Gulbarga , the attendance would not reach even 150 numbers, but today it has crossed 500, he expressed. He extended a warm welcome to the delegates, wished them a very fruitful and eventful participation in the Conference deliberations. He requested all the delegates to carry with them the sweet and unforgettable memories of their stay in Gulbarga . On behalf of Vice Chancellor of Gulbarga University, he welcomed all the delegates to the culturally rich City GULBARGA . Dr, De made an excellent presentation on ICT for Development and Web-based Information Systems. Recalling his entry to the information field, he elaborated on his new role as researcher in ICT for Sustainable Economic Development and said that it has many fascinating areas that have to be investigated. He placed many issues on the agenda of ICT for Development emphasizing what constitutes development a holistic approach which was visualized by the Nobel Laureate Dr. Amartya Sen. Dr. TAV Murhty, Director INFLIBNET in his Presidential address highlighted the major developments made during 2005-2006. He acknowledged the cooperation of Academic Libraries and encouragement received from UGC and the MHRD. He also pointed out the lead role played by the Government of Kerala in giving a new dimension to the journal consortia, INFONET Consortia byshowing their keen interest in adding the E-Books. Dr. Arthur Smith, Director OCLC , USA , the Chief Guest requested the University libraries to join OCLC network. Building Digital Libraries using Dspace; open source Digital Library software, the tutorial was conducted by Mr. Yatrik Patel of INFLIBNET which was attended by over 50 Delegates. The tutorial content explained the working of Dspace with practical aspects of creating Web-content for Digital Library of Books, Data Sheets, Computer Programs, Visuals, different types of files Text, Image, Audio and Video and so on. More than 500 delegates from India and abroad attended and deliberated on the theme and about 150 research papers were presented and interesting resolutions were endorsed. A lecture on IPR and E-resources was delivered by Dr. J.S. Patil, Dean, Faculty of Law, Gulbarga University , Gulbarga and has was most educative and informative presentation. AV Presentation on Dr. Eugene Garfield, President Emeritus, Thompson Scientific, USA . Dr. Garfield stands high on pedestal of Information Scientist, an information scientist of great eminence, who introduced Citation Indexing and today it stands as one of the methods of Information research and has discovered new areas of discourse. Cultural programs a dance recital by Omkar Nrutya Sadana and Classical music concert by Smt. Sangeeta Katti were also released. The valedictory session was held on Saturday, 4th February 2006 at 3.30 P.M and Mr. Justice S. R. Bannurmath, Honble Judge, High Court of Karnataka, Bangalore , the Chief Guest and delivered valedictory address. Prof. K. S. Deshpande (in absentia), Prof. S. R. Gunjal, former Librarians and Prof. Y. P. Dubey, Emeritus Professor, BHU were felicitated in the valedictory function, that was presided by Prof. V.B Coutinho, Vice Chancellor, Gulbarga University, Gulbarga. Sri S.B Policegoudar, Assistant Librarian and Sri D.V Biradar, Assistant Librarian, who retired from university library were felicitated. `Building Cyber Libraries a festschrift volume in honour of Dr M.Sankar Reddy, Hyderabad was released by Sri S.
