Dear Dr. Vyasa Murthy Regarding the Profeciency of English for Librarians ---- Now a days the medium of instruction right from childhood is in Regional language for many. Even the Degree is also in Regional Language medium. Eve the teachers are from the same group. After 15 years of education in regional medium the students come for B.L.I.Sc.and they switch over to englishmedium. So their efficiency in the english language will naturally be poor. They study in the exam point of view during the course and gaining knowledge will be secondary to them. After they pass out and gain some experience in different Jobs they will aquire english knowledge in a better way and will be able to write well and express well. But immediately after college the english will be broken english. I mean not able to speak fluiently. What I feel is not to blame Teachers for poor english of Students. Now a days lot of shopss have come up to teach speaking english, one month course etc. These are bogus and only for making money. May be one or two good. What I feel is that there should be English paper in the Curriculum to enable Librarians learn writing good english, speaking good english, writing of Reports etc. which will be use to Librarians activity.Of course In Graduation there will be English papers but studends give less impotance to that since the other subjects medium is Regional Language. Even in Interview if you ask them to write a letter they will not be able to write properly. In the political system the Thrust is on Regional Language medium education.. They want that English should be a Link language only. This is also one of the reason for poor english. Blaming our Professional Teachers is not good for poor english of students. Of course English medium students do fare well.Also Students studied in Metropolitan Cities do speak well in English. So the place of Study is also one of the factors.
