I think It is not right to discriminate between regular and distance education LIS degrees, which is against the UGC rules. There are hundreds of LIS professionals who have chosen a ‘shortcut’ method and obtained MLISc and PhD degrees from IGNOU, Annamalai, Alagappa & Madhrai Kamaraj universities, and are occupying highest positions in the profession. It is irony that the same people with such qualifications are insisting on regular MLISc? We all know that there is an acute unemployment problem in our profession, inspite of having too many professionals passing out from some ‘mediocre’ LIS schools which are responsible for the present ‘demand-supply mismatch’. I urge all my professional colleagues not to downgrade LIS jobs or discriminate LIS degrees based on their mode of learning; and try to fill up all the vacant posts they can. People with distance education do not have any right to prefer candidates with regular degrees. Let us also concentrate and work for filling up posts in public libraries apart from University library posts. I strongly believe that librarians and LIS teachers can work together in tandem to improve our profession. Dr M Koteswara Rao Former Librarian University of hyderabad Sent from my iPhone
