Dear Colleagues, This is a very interesting query and I always write to those who help us in supplying e-copies of the articles (if following is the case). Kindly allow me to describe the properties of scanner. One can set scanner to one of the modes: photo/colour (default), black & white (B&W) and gray scale. The text is normally in B&W mode and therefore one must set scanner to this mode when such pages are to be copied. The scanning with photo/colour mode settings result in a very high size picture thereby resulting in high file size. Moreover, this (photo) mode also leave a background of page and black borders looking quality of work ugly. A good scanning operator avoids such problems to produce quality work and least file size. Read http://www.scantips.com/begin.html and http://desktoppub.about.com/od/scanning/ss/scan_line_art.htm for more information. Hope this helps.
