Srinagar, Mar 17: A three-day workshop on 'Open Access Repositories and
Greenstone Software' was inaugurated in the Library Science department of
Kashmir University Monday.
The inaugural function was presided over by the vice-chancellor KU, Prof
Riyaz Punjabi. Prof Shabahat Hussain, a guest from Aligarh Muslim University
who specially visited the valley to attend the seminar was chief guest on
the occasion.
In his presidential address, the VC said that open access system utilizes
new technology and "it is time for us to adhere to this new technology in
order to keep pace with the changing times."
"Open access repositories is something close to my heart," he said.
He advised the management of the department to look for possibilities to
help affiliated colleges of the University to benefit from the new concept.
The VC showed an urge for the formation of a committee, which would carry
forward this work.
"The open access movement attempts to reassert control over publicly funded
research in order to make research output transparent and freely
accessible," he added.
In his address Prof Shabahat said that repositories were being established
world over as free access to knowledge.
"Open access repositories are being developed in the world and it is high
time that the concept be seriously taken up," he said.
Prof Riyaz Rufai, Librarian, Prof Muhammad Aslam, HoD MERC, besides
students, scholars and other dignitaries were also present on the occassion.
The workshop will continue for two days and noted scholars from the field
will read out their papers on the subject.
