Prof. Pangannaiah was my beloved teacher, very special to me. In my first job as Librarian, I was his proud successor at Udipi, a college library he had build and developed on a very modern line. He made my entry into profession so good and enjoyable that I owe him my success in the first leg of my career profusely to him. He is no more, a very sad feeling indeed. A fine human being, always helpful, he worked for the profession till his last days. I was lucky to have him as my teacher. We miss him. Let us pray for the departed soul. Pangannaya Here is my tribute to my beloved teacher Prof. N. Balakrishna Pangannaya who died due to multiple organ failure on October 1, 2006. He was quite active and had no sign of any illness. He attended to the professional work at his office at Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) even on the Friday, September 29, 2006. It is evident that he was contributing richly to the good cause of the profession till his last breath. NBP, as was called fondly by his students, was a teacher par-excellence. Like many of his students, his teachings have a great influence on my professional careers. What I like most in his teachings is his discussions on any topic based on logic and practical utility. He had excellent command over language and the subject. He had the ability to teach any difficult topic with great ease and make even the average students to understand the essence of the topic. His discourse on Information Processing and Retrieval (IPR) still rings in my ears. Prof. Pangannaya is one of the main pillars on which Department of Library and Information Science, University of Mysore, Mysore was built. He served the Department for more than three decades. He joined the Department as Lecturer in early 1970s and retired in 2000. For a brief term in-between he served Mangalore University as librarian. I had the fortune of associating myself with him in developing self instructional materials (SIM) for BLISc and MLISc programs of KSOU. He had undergone severe stress during the process of developing the course. In fact, SIM development of MLISc course is half through and he was trying his best to complete the assignment by December this year. It goes to his credit that he alone, single handedly, was able to coordinate the design and development of SIMs both in English and Kannada for BLISc in a record time of just one and half years. It may be noted here this achievement is a record of its kind in KSOU. No other Department was able to develop the SIMs in both the languages. His contributions were recognized and acknowledged by Prof. Sudha Rao, the present Vice Chancellor of KSOU in her key note address during the MLISc contact program held recently. The Department of Library and Information Science has organized a condolence meeting on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 at 4 PM. It will be attended by his students and colleagues in and around Mysore.
