I found the results of an excellent survey that Marshall Breeding
conducts each year on library technology. The International Survey for
2009 (which of course bypasses India and many other Asian countries for
reasons best known to the surveyor) is available at

I tried to conduct a similar survey of use of and satisfaction with
library management software (LMS) commercial and open source) and I
sent emails to several libraries of all kinds requesting them to fill
up a survey and return it to me. The questionnaire was a 1-page one and
would have taken librarians just 5 to 7 minutes to fill up. I was
totally disappointed that I received only 40 responses in eight months.
I decided to drop the idea of a survey completely.
What was also frustrating was that a few well-known vendors of LMS
refused to part with their customer lists.
