A one-day workshop sponsored under TEQIP-II by the COE in Knowledge Analytics and Ontological Engineering (KAnOE) in association with the Sarada Ranganathan Endowment for Library Science, on the occasion of the Birthday of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, to introduce participants to Categories for the Web : Towards a Semantic Web. Participants get an overview of the the notion of categories as understood and applied in Knowledge Organization and its relevance and potential application in organizing information on the Web with a specific focus on e-commerce. Library & Information professionals and students of LIS, Information Architects, Web Designers; Faculty and students of PESIT or other engineering colleges (from any department) as well as professionals from the industry. Suresh is Vice President and Research Fellow, Knowledge Management, at Infosys Ltd. He is one of the leading experts in the field of Knowledge Management in India. He has also contributed to various KM initiatives in academia, government and industry and is on the advisory boards of national and international institutions. He has written extensively on knowledge management in various forums and has secondary interests in education and learning. He obtained his BTech from IIT-Kanpur, MTech from IIT-Madras and PhD from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Resource Persons: Dr. A. Neelameghan Prof. A. Neelameghan, an internationally acclaimed scholar in Library and Information Science and Former Professor and Head, Documentation Research and Training Centre, Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore was formerly Head, Section on Institution Building and Networking, UNESCO/PGI and Regional Advisor for Asia-Pacific, UNESCO. He undertook Technical Assistance missions to developing countries in Asia, Arab League States, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean sponsored by UNESCO/PGI, UNDP, and IDRC. These missions included formulation of national information policies, development of information institutions, organizing and teaching in national and regional training workshops in information studies. He established a regional post-graduate programme for training science information specialists in South Asia at the University of Philippines in Manila, the School of Information Studies for Africa at the University in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, a similar programme for Latin America at the University of Simon Bolivar, Caracas, Venezuela, and a national training programme for China in Beijing. He retired from UN civil service in 1986. Following graduate and post-graduate studies in Madras, India, he studied documentation and information in science in USA on Rockefeller Foundation and Fulbright scholarships. He is currently associated with the Sarada Ranganathan Endowment for Library Science (1963-) and the Ranganathan Centre for Information Studies (1993-), both not-for-profit national charitable trusts promoting research, lectures, and publications in information studies. His areas of special interest are information for socio-economic development, capacity building in developing countries, indigenous information and spiritual information. Dr. K. S. Raghavan Dr. K. S. Raghavan is a Visiting Scientist at KAnOE- the Centre for Knowledge Analytics and Ontological Engineering at PESIT. Earlier, he was a professor at the Documentation Research and Training Centre (DRTC) of the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) and the Dean (Academic) and Head of the Department of Library and Information Science at the University of Madras where he was also the Chairperson of the School of Information and Communication Studies and the School of Mathematics, Computer and Information Science. He is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the international journal Knowledge Organization and has published widely in areas such as knowledge organization, multilingual thesauri and education for information. He holds a BSc in Physics and Mathematics and a Bachelor�s in Library Science from the University of Mysore, a Master�s in Library Science from the University of Delhi and the PhD from University of Mysore (1986). He recently edited a volume titled Categories, Contexts and Relations in Knowledge Organization. Dr. Kavi Mahesh Dr. Kavi Mahesh is the Director of the Centre for Knowledge Analytics and Ontological Engineering � KAnOE and a Professor of Computer Science at PES Institute of Technology, Bangalore, India. He is also a Principal Consultant with the Knowledge Management Group at Infosys Ltd. His areas of interest are knowledge management, epistemology, ontology, classification studies, text processing and unstructured data management. He has two US patents and has published two books, 13 book chapters and over 50 papers. He was previously with Oracle Corporation, USA and New Mexico State University and has consulted with Hewlett Packard, United Nations and EasyLib.com. He holds an M. Tech. in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay and an MS and a PhD in Computer Science from Georgia Institute of Technology, USA.
