Title: Recommendation Systems in Libraries - Improving User Experience & Discovery of Resources through Recommendation Systems

Coordinator: Dr. Biswanath Dutta

Speaker: Racha Singh

Abstract

Traditionally libraries have been functioning as providers of reliable information to their users with their collections of books & resources. However, the emerging technologies have been shaping them (libraries) to function as dynamic hubs of knowledge and information. In the era of such technological advancements, libraries have to keep evolving in the ways they function while meeting diverse user needs.

One of the identifiable challenges faced by library/information service providers is in addressing the problem of ‘information overload’ while navigating vast collections of information and assisting users with the information they need in less time and with more efficiency. Recommender systems (or recommendation systems) functioning as efficient information filtering tools, search through large volumes of dynamically generated information, and provide users with personalized content and are therefore widely recognized for their role in e-commerce and online media platforms.

This seminar explores the application of recommender systems in library settings, discussing various approaches to information filtering through recommender systems and the research in this domain. The seminar thus aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the role of recommendation systems in the library environment and how they can improve library services along with the user experience by providing more relevant and personalized services.
