INDIAN STATISTICAL INSTITUTE *Documentation Research Training Centre* 8th Mile Mysore Road Bangalore – 560059 DRTC Colloquium (4) 2011-2013 *Strong Semantic: Ontology* ABSTRACT Ontology is a formal, explicit specification of shared conceptualization. Having evolved from philosophical foundations, ontology can be defined as a “hierarchical structure that formally defines the semantic relationship of a set of concepts and is used to create structured, controlled vocabularies for the discovery or exchange of information.” In computer science, ontologies have emerged from the area of artificial intelligence as a way of representing domainknowledge. In the run to realize the Semantic Web, ontologies provide an impetus that would give rise to logical reasoning, knowledge engineering and applications development in order to make the metadata on the web more semantically enriched. Currently it is a hot topic of interest in the frontier research areasand its usefulness can be perceived in a great number of applications. The aim of this colloquium is to provide a brief knowledge on the recent trends of ontology development and ontologization engineering techniques. The various ontology languages for ontology creation and some popular application tools available will also be highlighted. *Facets * 1) Introduction by Subhashis Das 2) Ontology language by Sonali Kishore Kalani 3) Ontology Engineering Tools by Amit Kumar Shaw 4) Application of Ontology by Mayukh Biswas 5) Conclusion by Anurodh Kumar Sinha Venue: DRTC Classroom Date: 30th May, 2012 Time: 2.00pm All are cordially invited (Dr. M.
