Online social media platforms play an important role in spreading and promoting scholarly and scientific publications. The traditional citation-based metrics do not consider the increasing variety of online references to a scholar's work. Altmetric, an alternative to traditional bibliometrics, measures the scholarly publications not only based on the citations but also the views, share, comments, mentions, downloads, etc. in social media platforms, such as Twitter, blogs, Wikipedia, Youtube, Facebook. In this colloquium, we will discuss the evolution of altmetrics, relevant tools and recommendations. We will also talk about on deriving methods of altmetrics scores, various agents with the special emphasis on libraries and impacts of altmetrics on the scholarly community.
